Georgia: opposition bags subscription for amending electoral legislation

The oppositional "National Forum" starts bagging subscriptions in support of its bill on amending the Electoral Code of Georgia.

As stated by Irakli Melashvili, political secretary of the Forum, the bill, in particular, assumes introduction of biometric passports for voting at parliamentary elections in Georgia in 2012.

"Voting according to biometric passports excludes any repeated voting of one and the same voter, thus excluding one aspect of falsification," he believes.

The "National Forum" has already brought the bill to the parliament of Georgia. To initiate its consideration by parliamentary committees, the Forum should present 30,000 citizens' subscription in its support within five days.

"We're actively starting the sign-in campaign, and we are going to persuade the government that our society has a serious intention to replace the power by elections," the "News-Georgia" quotes Mr Melashvili as saying.

The "GHN" reports that the "National Forum" is going to bag more than 30,000 subscriptions.
