Georgian opposition urges parliament to reject new Constitution

Ten oppositional parties of Georgia have made a joint statement asking the parliament not to adopt the new version of the national Constitution. The signatories believe that the hasty consideration of the bill has only one aim - granting guarantees to Mikhail Saakashvili that he will continue ruling the country as prime minister after the end of his presidency.

The statement was signed by representatives of the "New Right-Wingers", "National Forum", "Democratic Movement - United Georgia", Conservative and Republican Parties, "Industry to Save Georgia", Political Association "Georgia's Way", "Christian-Democratic Movement", "People's Party" and the Party "Our Georgia - Free Democrats".

The new draft of the Constitution of Georgia was adopted by the majority of votes at the sitting of the State Constitutional Commission on July 19. Now, it will be considered by the President. Finally, the Constitution will be approved by the parliament of Georgia.
