Residents of Armenia are ambiguous to opening foreign-language in the country

A protest action against opening of foreign-language schools in Armenia was held on June 4 in Yerevan. During debates at the parliamentary commission around the draft amendments to the Laws of the Republic of Armenia "On Languages" and "On General Education" some 30-40 activists gathered at the building of the national parliament.

The Ministry of Education and Sciences of Armenia has developed a legislative package in the sphere of languages and general education, which will allow introducing foreign-language education in Armenian schools in analogy to the one already in force in the higher school system.

At the building of the National Assembly, the protesters stuck leaflets with demands to dismiss Armen Ashotyan, Minister of Education and the leaflet "Remove irrevocably the treacherous bill".

"We are here to express again our disapproval of amendments of the above legislation; and we are ready to organize a large rally in case these amendments are adopted," said Aram Apatyan, one of the activists of the initiative group "We are against opening foreign-language schools".

Architect Ruben Tarumyan has expressed his confidence that the law was imposed on Armenia from abroad. "If we let to open at least one school, it will lead to a chain reaction; then, the second and the third ones will be opened and so on," he said to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
