Opposition party leader survived attempt in Zugdidi

A group of armed men tried to attack leader of the National Movement opposition election bloc Mikhail Saakashvili in the Western Georgian town of Zugdidi yesterday.

Footage broadcasted by Georgian TV stations shows how Saakashvili's supporters stopped the car which tried to break into the crowd surrounding Saakashvili in the center of Zugdidi. Bodyguards of Saakashvili dragged out of the car several armed men. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

The police appeared at the scene of the incident later and failed to detain the attackers, who escaped.
