ECtHR fines Russia for death of Chechen resident
Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has obliged the Russian Federation to pay compensation of 60,000 euros to the widow and mother of a Chechen of 22, who was kidnapped and disappeared in the course of a military operation in Chechnya.
According to the Strasbourg Court, the young man was kidnapped by armed people in uniform in 2004 and is considered to be a casualty. The ECtHR is sure that he was kidnapped by Russian militaries.
Thus, the person's right to life was broken. Besides, the Court believes that the Russian party has failed to hold a sufficient investigation of this crime, as the Deutsche Welle writes.
The Russian Federation has already been found guilty for more than one hundred times of similar offences. In total, the proceedings at the ECtHR concerned more than 200 peaceful residents killed or kidnapped in the course of the warfare in Northern Caucasus, the "Gazeta.Ru" writes. The fate of most of them is still unknown.
