Chechen authorities plan to pay compensations for lost housing to over 5000 residents by the end of this year

Chechnya goes on with the process of paying monetary compensations for the housing lost in the course of the warfare, which was started back in 2003. The authorities of the republic promise to pay out, till the end of this year, the sums as established by the law - 350,000 roubles (300,000 for destroyed houses and 50,000 - for lost property) - to 5300 families.

According to the Department of Ministerial Financing of the Ministry of Finance of Chechnya, from the start of this year, 2700 local residents have received compensations for the lost housing and property.

Residents of the republic differ in their attitude to payment of compensations. Some people think that Moscow and Grozny failed to take effective measures to timely pay out compensations to victims.

"For seven years already the authorities can't decide who should receive the money. And nobody says that 350,000 today is not the sum the family, which lost its housing and property, should receive. In 2003, you could really do something for 350,000 roubles; today, it is not enough even for building temporary barrack or a normal foundation for a house. They said that they would increase the compensation sum, but nothing was done," said Marina, a local resident.

"When there was war in South Ossetia, Russia not only sent its troops there, but also helped the population of another country. However, they wouldn't help us, citizens of Russia, who faced two wars within 15 years. What should I do with this 350,000 even if I get it tomorrow? Just maybe a land plot somewhere in Grozny suburb or materials to build a summer kitchen," said Mokhmad, a resident of Grozny.
