Pyatigorsk joins "Earth Hour" global action

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) holds a worldwide mass action "Earth Hour". This year, on March 27, the city-resort of Pyatigorsk, the capital of the NCFD (North-Caucasian Federal District), will join the action. Citizens of the cities-participants of the action will be invited to switch off all the illumination for one hour - from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Moscow time with the aim to contribute to the planet's healthy climate. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learnt about it at Information and Analytical Division of the Pyatigorsk City Duma.

"The aim of the action is to draw the attention of the society, authorities and businessmen to the problem of global climate changes and to call the people worldwide to save energy and other natural resources," said Darya Babicheva, head of the Duma's information division.

Lev Travnev, Mayor of Pyatigorsk, has stated his support of the action and called everyone, not indifferent to preservation of the Earth's ecological equilibrium, to take part in the "Earth Hour".

In the course of the action, Pyatigorsk also plans to save electricity by switching off some decorative architectural illumination. Thus, illumination of the Pyatigorsk TV Tower and other objects of the city will be switched off.

However, as the action organizers remark, the "Earth Hour" does not assume any absolute illumination and electricity disconnection: safety and emergency lamps in public places, street illumination, traffic lights and security signalling system will not be interrupted.

"Along with Pyatigorsk, the 'Earth Hour' will be supported by the major megalopolises of the planet - Sydney, Athens, Rome, New York, Copenhagen, Chicago, London; in total, over 1000 cities worldwide. The action 'Earth Hour' should be an eloquent symbol of public appeal to drastic measures towards preservation of healthy climate and reduction of hotbed gas emission," the Pyatigorsk City Duma reports.
