Over 700 villages in SFD and NCFD are under threat of flooding

In the Southern and North-Caucasian Federal Districts (SFD and NCFD), the forthcoming high water threatens to flood 731 dwelling settlements. This was stated on March 4 in Stavropol at the session of the Commission for Emergencies and Fire Safety.

At session considered the accident-free passage of high water and prevention of accidents due to threat of avalanches. As reported by Robert Kireev, deputy head of the Southern Regional Centre (SRC) of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) of the Russian Federation, the most dangerous consequences of high water are possible in the territory of the Rostov and Volgograd Regions. Based on the worst scenario of development of high water, according to his story, the Rostov Region has 13 endangered municipal areas with the total population of 26,000 persons, and the Volgograd Region - 24 such areas with the population of 30,000 persons.

The SFD has the most problematic areas in the vicinity of the Volga-Kama Flight and Shapsut water basin in the Republic of Adygea.

Besides, according to Sergey Shaposhnikov, director of the Department of Civil Defence of the Russian MfE, 172 railway sections are under threat of flooding in the territories of the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Rostov and Astrakhan Regions.

As reported to the session, now the monitoring of the condition of water bodies in the SFD and NCFD is conducted by 309 hydrology posts. A grouping of emergency forces of the subjects of the Russian Federation was set up for liquidation of potential consequences. As reported by the "RBC. Southern Region", 15 pyrotechnic teams were set up to break the ice and possible clogs; and 7 ice breakers of the river and mixed classes have been prepared.

At the same time, in the opinion of Colonel Valery Sinkov, head of the Emergencies Prevention Department of the Southern Regional Centre of the MfE of the Russian Federation, "there's no need to escalate passions and predict that the spring high water in 2010 will be catastrophic."
