Ten persons perished in roads of Chechnya within a month

The high accident rate persists in the roads of Chechnya. In January, the republic saw 20 large road accidents, where ten persons, including two children, were lost. Many residents of the republic believe that the reasons of the complicated situation are in the very system, while the STSI (State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, known in Russia as "GIBDD") needs serious reforming.

In his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, a source from the republic's GIBDD expressed his concern of the fact that public transport vehicles (buses and fixed-route taxis) get into accidents.

"Last year we had six large accidents with public transport, where three persons were lost and 14 more wounded. In most of them drivers were guilty," said the source.

The accident rate has gone up in Chechnya with the onset of winter frosts.

According to the road inspector, despite the taken measures, the GIBDD so far is unable to reduce the accident rate. Only during ten months of last year, 240 serious road accidents were registered in the territory of Chechnya, where 138 persons were lost and 360 more wounded.

Meanwhile, many local residents believe that just GIBDD agents are mainly guilty of the situation.

"Car inspectors bother, first of all, about their own benefits. A driver is watched by them as an object for extorting money. Least of all they are interested whether drivers know and observe traffic rules," said Hussein Idrisov, a resident of Grozny.
