Drivers in Chechnya dissatisfied with work of local road police

The work of the Chechen Department of the Federal State Traffic Safety Inspectorate (STSI) is arousing criticism by traffic actors. Drivers complain that frequently the highways of the republic are patrolled by absolutely professionally unprepared and incompetent STSI employees, who see their main task to get enriched at the account of traffic participants.

Let us note here that the republic's leadership has also repeatedly criticised the STSI for its inability to overturn the situation with high accident level on local roads. This June President of Chechnya secretly inspected the work of the STSI and was extremely dissatisfied with what he saw.

"Yesterday, at about 5 p.m. in my car I gave a lift to my friend," on August 28 said Movsar, a resident of Grozny. "I'm a professional driver, and still work as such."

According to his story, in the Staropromyslovskoe Highway, near Ivanov settlement, where they have a stationary militia post, his car was stopped. The inspector told the driver that he had drove at 80 kilometres per hour. Movsar asserts that his speed was within 40 km/h.

He tried to explain that the inspector had, possibly, got mistaken, and asked to show him the radar reading. The STSI inspector replied that "he was not obliged to show anything to anybody" and insisted to pay 1500 roubles for the alleged violation.

According to Movsar, he was, so to say, lucky, as his close relative is a militia officer, who, having learned about the incident, came to the post and "settled the problem."

A representative of the republic's STSI, with whom the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent managed to talk, said that speaking about any gross violations by road policemen will be possible only if the affected party submits a respective application.
