Guluzade: neither USA nor Russia need Gabal Radar Station in Azerbaijan

After the States' refusal to deploy their ballistic missile defence system in Eastern Europe, the joint Russian-American use of the Gabal Radar Station in Azerbaijan is an alternative scenario, but, generally speaking, neither country in fact needs the station. This is the opinion of Azerbaijani political scientist Vafa Guluzade, former state adviser on foreign policy.

"Americans have no interest in the Gabal Radar Station. Same with Russia: they have new and more powerful stations. But I believe that in case of good friendly Russia-USA relations, the former can directly, without any agreement, deliver to Americans the data on Iran, obtained by the Gabal Radar Station," the IA "News-Azerbaijan" quotes Mr Guluzade.

Doubts that the USA wish to use the Gabal Radar Station were also expressed by Andrei Piontkovskiy, scientific collaborator of the Hudson Institute Research Centre (USA) and Executive Director of the Centre of Strategic Studies (Russia).

"I don't think that the USA are technologically interested in the Gabal Radar Station, because it's obsolete. Why in due time they refused to exchange their would-be radars in Czechia for the Gabal? Because these are different types of radars. They need a radar capable to point anti-missiles, while the Gabal Radar Station is just fixing missile launches in the covered territories," "The First News" quotes the expert as saying.
