CPJ awards "Freedom of Press" to convicted Azerbaijani journalist

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has announced decoration of a group of journalists from several countries of the world with the award "Freedom of Press" for 2009. Among the recipients are journalists from Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Einullah Fatullaev, a convicted Azerbaijani journalist.

"These are the reporters, who cry, with the risk to their freedom and life, in full voice, which is heard in their countries and elsewhere in the world," said Paul Steiger, chairman of the Board of the CPJ.

"These journalists were awarded for their fight against injustice and in support of the values of free press," Joel Simon, director of the CPJ, has added.

The journalists will be rewarded on November 24 in New York at a solemn ceremony. It is not known yet who will represent Fatullaev there, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"The news about decoration of Einullah Fatullaev with this award of the Amnesty International was a great event both for him and for our whole family. In his journalistic work Einullah struggled for justice and ideals of democracy. Every person has his or her mission. Einullah's mission was to be journalist. He's obviously missing his work - in fact, he was busy with it day and night, now he's been in prison for two years," said the imprisoned journalist's father.
