In Dagestan, OMON fighter murdered

At night on August 31, a serviceman of the local OMON (Special Militia), a division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan, was assassinated in Makhachkala. This was reported by the press service of the city UVD (Interior Department); according to law enforcers, the crime was committed at about 11:00 p.m. Moscow time on August 30.

In these latter days, attacks on militiamen are committed in Dagestan on a regular basis. Thus, at night of August 30, unknown persons attacked the OMON commander of the interior division for transport of Makhachkala Militia Colonel Magomed Baisultanov. The struck him on the head, took away his service pistol and disappeared. The OMON commander was hospitalized with brain concussion.

"An unknown person knocked at the door of a private house in the Baturaya Street, where the militiaman lived. When he opened the door, the criminal made five shots at him and ran away. The victim died in place from the wounds," the "Interfax" quotes the press service.

On August 28, in Makhachkala, a Militia Major, who was in charge of the Kirov District of the city, was killed.

On August 24, unknown persons shelled the city militia department of Khasavyurt. On August 21, the house of the head of the Sergokalin District of Dagestan and the building of the local militia unit were shelled. In both cases, there were no victims. In the evening on August 20, a road sentry militiaman was killed in Chontaul village, Kizilyurt District of Dagestan.

By the estimates, based on the data of the "Caucasian Knot" own correspondents and on open sources, in the first half of 2009, at least 30 law enforcers and soldiers were murdered and over 40 were wounded in the republic. Besides, 12 peaceful residents were lost, and 11 wounded.
