Amirov: maintaining safety in capital of Dagestan faces problems

Today, at the sitting of the antiterrorist commission of Makhachkala, chaired by City Mayor Said Amirov, officials gave their estimates of the current operative situation in the context of recent frequent attacks on militia posts and encroachments on law enforcers. According to the Mayor, the situation is hard.

At the same time, as Mr Amirov said, with appointment of the new republic's Interior Minister, a hope appeared that the situation will change for the better.

"I've met Ali Magomedov, the newly appointed head of MIA," said Said Amirov. "He emphasized his intention to struggle with 'turnskins' among militiamen and make everything to reduce the crime rate."

The Makhachkala Mayor was critical towards the republic's authorities, since none of the top officials had appeared on television to explain the situation to the population and inform residents of Dagestan about the measures taken to ensure their safety.

Especially, as Said Amirov has emphasized, it refers the rumours circulating over the city about alleged murders of young women for not wearing Islamic clothes, and captures by terrorists of public health and culture objects.

The head of the city militia Rasul Gazimagomedov made a report about the complex situation in law enforcement bodies. He complained of insufficient technical equipment, giving an example that in the course of an operation, while chasing criminals, an old militia's UAZ minivan just died out.

As a measure to counteract criminals, the boss of city militia offered to ban tinting car glasses and restrict issuing powers of attorney on driving vehicles in a simple written form. Mr Gazimagomedov put forward an initiative to restrict the work of night banquet halls, restaurants and clubs; however, having specified that some legal grounds will be needed for that.
