Sochi ecologists plan to stop deforestation at construction of Adler-Krasnaya Polyana highway

The Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus is going to stop felling at the construction of the combined highway Adler-Krasnaya Polyana (Red Meadow). Andrei Rudomakha, coordinator of the Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus said that now ecologists plan to lodge applications to law enforcement bodies. Then the "greens" want to stop the tree felling, which is underway there, according to ecology activists, with their own bodies.

Mr Rudomakha has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that on Monday, August 17, ecologists revealed that road builders had cut down several kilometres of forest. As the ecologist has noted, trees from the Russian Red Book were felled. "The deforestation started in early August, but we had no exact information, whether it was legal or not. Only now we've managed to reveal that Red-Book trees had been felled, which is illegal in any case," he said and added that, according to ecologists, the works in this site are conducted without any project.

Mr Rudomakha promised that applications would be submitted to the prosecutor's office and militia today. "We've tried to involve law enforcement bodies and 'Olympstroy' operatively, but failed," he has noted and said that activists of the Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus are going to stop felling today. "We'll stand in front of their machines and hamper any further felling," Andrei Rudomakha has explained.
