Locusts devastate 90,000 hectares of farmland in Volgograd Region

90,000 hectares are actually devastated in the Region, and 80,000 hectares have been treated against these insects. Now, additional 5.5 million were allocated from the regional budget to fight this calamity.

Under decision of the Regional Emergencies Commission, state of emergency was announced in a number of municipal formations. "Now, high level of maggots of this insect-pest was revealed in 11 districts of the region," regional officials report.

84 surface machines and 10 aircrafts are involved in works of locust liquidation.

According to biologists, flocks of locusts can overcome huge distances - up to 3000 kilometres. Aircrafts registered locust flocks at the altitude of up to 2000 meters. Separate flocks can reach even 6000 meters, while the average height of their flight is about 600 meters.
