"Reporters without Borders" are concerned of appeals to put Internet in Azerbaijan under control

Jean-Francois Juliar, secretary general of the international organization in defence of the press "Reporters without Borders" (RwB) has sent messages to Ali Gasanov, head of the political division of President's Administration, and Nushiravan Magerramli, chairman of the National Television and Radio Board (NTRB), expressing his concern of the statements proposing to set up control over the Internet space of Azerbaijan.

"On June 4 you said that the Internet should be controlled, since it has plenty of disinformation that had nearly quarrelled Turkey and Azerbaijan. Until now, Azerbaijan has rather open and unlimited Internet," runs the statement of the RwB secretary general.

"This sphere is regulated by the law on telecommunications adopted in 2005. Therefore, we think that the decision to control the Internet will be purely political and an essential step from the viewpoint of the freedom of expression," runs Mr Juliar's letter to Mr Gasanov, a copy of which has arrived from the RwB's central office to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
