Two Georgian residents have been detained in connection with an espionage case.

The head of the NGO Eurasia Institute, Gulbaat Rtskhiladze, and journalist Irakli Chikhladze have been detained in connection with an espionage case.

As reported by the Caucasian Knot, at the end of April, a Georgian citizen was detained for espionage for foreign intelligence services, and two others have been charged in absentia.

The head of the NGO Eurasia Institute, Gulbaat Rtskhiladze, has been detained in Georgia on espionage charges. Investigators claim he collaborated with the intelligence services of two foreign countries, Georgia Online reported on May 30.

According to the State Security Service, Rtskhiladze had systematic, high-level, conspiratorial contacts with representatives of foreign intelligence agencies, passing them information during personal meetings and electronically, and also meeting with them for briefings and conspiracy outside of Georgia.

Several days before his arrest, Rtskhiladze announced that a group of pro-Russian NGOs would create a registry of individuals in Georgia who foster negative attitudes toward Russia and criticize its actions.

On the same day, journalist Irakli Chakhlidze, editor-in-chief and author of the expert-analytical portal Newcaucasus, was detained, according to News-Georgia.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 314 of the Georgian Criminal Code (espionage).
