Rescuers are evacuating two tourists stranded on Mount Elbrus.

Two tourists stranded on the slope of Mount Elbrus have sent out a distress signal, and rescuers are evacuating them.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported a rescue operation for two tourists who sent out a distress signal after becoming stranded at an altitude of 5,100 meters on the slope of Mount Elbrus, TASS reported today, citing the ministry.

Rescuers have located the group, and the tourists' condition is assessed as satisfactory. Rescuers are helping them descend the mountain.

Ten people and three pieces of equipment have been dispatched to help. The rescue operation, which involves tourists who did not register their route, is complicated by sub-zero temperatures and a snowstorm, Interfax reports.

Previously, "Caucasian Knot" reported that at the end of April, rescuers evacuated an unregistered tourist and a female climber from Mongolia from Elbrus.

In 2021, the deaths of five tourists on Elbrus caused a public outcry: a group of 19 climbers were caught in a snowstorm at an altitude of over 5,000 meters. Five died, 11 were taken to the hospital, and three refused hospitalization. Following the tragedy, local historian Viktor Kotlyarov proposed introducing mandatory certification for companies and guides, as well as examinations to confirm tourists' mountaineering skills. In 2025, the organizer of the ascent was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison, and two instructors and guides were sentenced to three years and two months and three and a half years in prison. Elbrus is a twin-peaked cone of an extinct volcano, with both peaks exceeding 5.6 kilometers in height.
