A villager in Azerbaijan was injured in a mine explosion.

In the village of Yusifjanly in the Agdam district, a local resident was blown up by a mine; his lower left leg was amputated.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in mid-January 2026, in the village of Gyzyloba in the Agdere district, Elvin Kerimov, an employee of a non-governmental organization involved in mine clearance, was blown up by an anti-personnel mine; his leg was amputated.

In the village of Yusifjanly in the Agdam district, Jeyhun Abbasov, born in 1985, was blown up by an anti-personnel mine in an area of ​​the former contact line that had not been cleared of mines. As a result, he sustained a wound to his left leg, Oxu.Az reported.

His friend Vugar Guluyev shared details of the incident: "He was heading to his own house, and literally a few steps from the gates of his yard, an explosion occurred. I appeal to all my friends, acquaintances, and relatives: do not go there. This village is one of the most mined areas in the Aghdam region," Guluyev said.

Treatment for the patient, who was diagnosed with a traumatic amputation of the lower third of his left leg, continues; his condition is assessed as moderate, doctors at the Barda Central District Hospital said.

An investigation into the incident is underway at the Aghdam District Prosecutor's Office.

The Azerbaijan Republic Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) reported that in Tartar, Aghdere, Kalbajar, A total of 4,963 anti-personnel mines, 1,861 anti-tank mines, and 52,392 unexploded ordnance (UXO) were found and defused in Aghdam, Khojaly, Khankendi, Khojavand, Lachin, Shusha, Fizuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan, Azertac reported.

Since the end of the 44-day war (from September 27 to November 9, 2020), 415 people have fallen victim to mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Azerbaijan, 71 of whom died and another 344 were injured to varying degrees, according to a publication by the Report agency dated December 26, 2025.

"Anti-personnel mines most often lead to amputations of the lower limbs and serious human tragedies. All incidents are recorded in the agency's information system," the head of the education department said. Ramil Azizov, head of the Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), said on December 29 that he was responsible for the work with victims.

He also emphasized that since 1991, more than 3,400 citizens have fallen victim to mines and unexploded ordnance.

In Aghdam, local residents are dismantling mine warning signs without permission and using these areas for agricultural work, ignoring the mine danger. According to him, in some areas, extracted mines are being found piled up in one place; these actions may pose a danger and should be the subject of investigation by law enforcement agencies.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported in April 2025 that the death toll from mine explosions following the 44-day 2020 war in Karabakh had reached 392. In August 2023, Azerbaijani public organizations appealed to the UN and the European Union to help resolve the problem with demining the country's territories. In May 2024, the European Union, which had allocated 10 million euros to Azerbaijan for demining since 2020, agreed to increase its financial assistance to Baku for demining the former Karabakh conflict zone to 14 million euros.
