Four Azerbaijani citizens have been arrested for participating in fighting in Ukraine.

Four Azerbaijani citizens, who, according to investigators, participated in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, have been taken into custody.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," 26 Azerbaijani nationals who fought on the side of Ukrainian troops were killed, the Ukrainian ambassador to Azerbaijan reported in May 2023. He noted that these were ethnic Azerbaijanis living in Ukraine.

The State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan reported today on its website about the arrest of four citizens of Azerbaijan who took part in the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

"The participation of citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Nabiyev Real Eldeniz oglu, born in 1991, Huseynov Faris Famil oglu, born in 1993, Mamedov Ali Elnur oglu and Mirgashimli Murov Hasan oglu, born in 1994, in hostilities under the control of the armed formations of Russia and Ukraine has been proven. In connection with this, these individuals were detained and prosecuted in January 2026, and a court decision was made to choose a "A preventive measure in the form of detention," the statement, published in Russian, said.

According to the department, "a significant number" of Azerbaijani citizens took part in the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. "As a result, many of them were killed, went missing, or were wounded, and it has also been established that some are being held captive," the statement noted.

As a reminder, in March 2022, 29-year-old Elnur Hasanov was killed near Kyiv. His body was brought to Azerbaijan and handed over to his family; he was buried in the Goranboy district.

There may be about 300 Azerbaijani volunteers in Ukraine, but these are mostly Ukrainian citizens or Azerbaijani citizens living in that country, a representative of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Kyiv reported in April 2022.
