Garegin II's nephew has been arrested

A Yerevan court, following the example of his father, Gevorg Nersisyan, has arrested his son, Ambartsum, who is the nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, for a month.

"Caucasian Knot" reported that the brother and nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, Gevorg Nersisyan and Ambartsum Nersisyan, have been detained on charges of obstructing a campaign and hooliganism. On the evening of November 3, Gevorg Nersisyan was arrested for one month.

A Yerevan court has sentenced Hambardzum Nersisyan, the nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, to one month of pretrial detention, News.am reports.

As a reminder, Hambardzum Nersisyan faces the same charges as his father – obstructing election campaigning (Article 211 of the Armenian Criminal Code). Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan called the statement by Harutyun Mkrtchyan, a candidate for the Vagharpashat Council of Elders from the Republic Party, which served as the basis for the criminal case, "false denunciation."

The open confrontation between the Armenian authorities and church representatives has been ongoing for several months. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan sharply criticized the church at a government meeting on May 29. On June 27, security forces detained the head of the Shirak Diocese, Mikael Ajapayan (also referred to in the media as Mikael Ajapakhyan), on charges of calling for the seizure of power; Ajapayan was later sentenced to two years in prison. In October, Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, who is the nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, and six clergy, as well as several civilians, were detained in Armenia on suspicion of abuse of office to organize mass protests.
