A Baku court sentenced Sumgait resident Abdullah Aliyev to 13 years in prison, finding him guilty of ties to a terrorist organization and preparing an attack on the Mountain Jewish synagogue in Baku.

Baku The Serious Crimes Court sentenced Abdulla Aliyev, finding him guilty of committing crimes under Articles 28.214.2.1 (preparation for terrorism by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, an organized group, or a criminal community), 28.214.2.3 (preparation for terrorism with the use of firearms and objects used as weapons), 28.214.2.6 (preparation for terrorism motivated by religious hatred, religious radicalism, or fanaticism), and 218.2 (participation in a criminal community) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, Oxu.az reported on October 27.

According to the investigation, Aliyev was planning a large-scale attack on the Mountain Jews synagogue in Baku, but was detained while attempting to commit the crime. It was discovered that he had sworn allegiance to the terrorist leader nicknamed Abu Radd. An axe, two knives, and incendiary explosive devices.

In his final statement, Aliyev expressed remorse for his actions. The defense petitioned for an acquittal, but the petition was denied. The court sentenced Aliyev to 13 years in prison, to be served in a maximum-security correctional facility.
