Flights and trains resume in southern Russia after drone strike

Volgograd and Sochi airports have resumed operations, although five flights had to divert to alternate airfields. Train service through the Petrov Val station in the Volgograd region has been restored after a UAV fragment fell on a locomotive depot.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, Sochi airport suspended the acceptance and release of aircraft amid reports of a drone attack in the Krasnodar region.   On the evening of August 27, restrictions were introduced at the Volgograd airport,

Train service through the Petrov Val station in the Volgograd region has been restored. "The following passenger trains are currently delayed: No. 107 Volgograd - Nizhnevartovsk, No. 505 Imeretinsky Kurort - Saratov, No. 244 Novokuznetsk - Anapa, No. 358 Ufa - Imeretinsky Kurort. The maximum delay time is less than an hour," the Privolzhskaya Railway said in a message on its Telegram channel. Train traffic was restored amid the extinguishing of a fire at the locomotive depot, the fire has been extinguished. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

During the period of restrictions, three aircraft flying to Volgograd and two aircraft flying to Sochi were sent to alternate airfields. Restrictions on the receipt and release of aircraft at the airports of Volgograd and Sochi were lifted at 5.22 Moscow time, Rosaviatsia press secretary Artem Korenyako reported on his Telegram channel.

Authorities acknowledge fire at oil refinery in Afipsky

One of the units of the oil refinery caught fire due to the fall of debris from a drone in the village of Afipsky in Krasnodar Krai. There are no casualties, the fire is being extinguished by 21 people using eight pieces of equipment, the regional operational headquarters reported.

"In the Seversky District and Gelendzhik, the consequences of a drone attack (...) on civilian objects are being eliminated. In Gelendzhik, near the village of Krinitsa, after the fall of the drone debris, a fire broke out in a forest area. Three fires with a total area of 200 square meters were discovered," the Krasnodar Territory operational headquarters said in a message on the Telegram channel.

It should be noted that reports of a fire that started after a series of explosions in the village of Afipsky appeared in Telegram channels at about 3:40 Moscow time. According to local residents, "6-8 powerful explosions were heard at about 3 a.m." An oil refinery is located in the village of Afipsky, which has previously been attacked. In particular, fires at the Afipsky Oil Refinery occurred on May 31 and October 29, 2023.  

The Ministry of Defense reported 41 drones shot down in the skies over the regions of the Southern Federal District

A total of 102 unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down on the night of August 28, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. 21 fixed-wing UAVs were intercepted over the Rostov Region, 18 drones - in the skies over the Krasnodar Territory, and two more drones - over the territory of the Volgograd Region, according to a statement on the department's Telegram channel.
