The Supreme Court of Dagestan considered Atavov's testimony sufficient for a deal

The deal between former police officer Islam Atavov and the investigation into the death of Makhachkala resident Kurban Dalgatov was lawful, the Supreme Court of Dagestan ruled. The trial of the other defendants in the torture case continues with witness interrogations.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on December 9, 2024, the court sentenced Makhachkala police officer Islam Atavov to 7.5 years in prison, finding him guilty in the case of Kurban Dalgatov's death. Dalgatov's family lawyer Madina Aliyeva appealed the verdict, but the Supreme Court of Dagestan upheld it. This decision did not satisfy the victims' side, and their lawyers decided to file a cassation appeal against Atavov's verdict.

The lawyer representing the interests of the family of Kurban Dalgatov received the full text of the ruling of the Supreme Court of Dagestan on the appeal of the sentence of Islam Atavov. Atavov entered into an agreement with the investigation and the court considered that his testimony was sufficient for such a deal, a source close to the victims told the "Caucasian Knot".

"It says that Atavov allegedly gave incriminating testimony. Arguments that this incriminating testimony differs from reality were not taken into account. At the moment, the lawyer is preparing a cassation appeal," he noted.

The court in the Dalgatov case continued to interrogate witnesses throughout August, the source added.

"The court is examining evidence. They are interrogating prosecution witnesses. They confirm the testimony they gave during the investigation. For example, doctors remember how they were called to the police station and they saw Dalgatov there," he said, emphasizing that interrogations will continue in September.

"Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote that on January 20, 2023, before the arrest of 35-year-old Kurban Dalgatov, a conflict between two men occurred on the street. According to the police, one of them shot at his opponent and escaped with the help of Dalgatov. Kurban Dalgatov was found and detained. At the police station, his health worsened, he was given first aid and taken to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead. Relatives said that Dalgatov died of suffocation, which occurred after he was "shocked in the heart area." The man received injuries before his death, the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed.

There are three victims in the case: in addition to Dalgatov, two of his acquaintances were detained, who were also tortured. At the court hearing on July 7, the victim Bulat Atayev told how he was tortured and how he heard Dalgatov's screams.
