The defence of the arrested Russian entrepreneur, Samvel Karapetyan, has withdrawn its appeal complaint against the ruling to arrest him because of the judge who will hear the case, Armen Feroyan, Karapetyan's advocate, has informed.
Armen Feroyan, who represents Mr Karapetyan’s interests, has issued a statement in which he announced the withdrawal of the appeal complaint against his client’s the arrest. "I filed an appeal against the clearly illegal decision to detain Samvel Karapetyan under a fabricated criminal case on June 19, 2025, to the Criminal Court of Appeal. However, with unprecedented speed, which probably indicates some outside interference, the case materials were promptly transferred to Judge Armen Danielyan," the statement says.
"Given the fact that this judge has been the lowest-rated, most frequently questioned and lacking sense of justice judge for decades, as a result of discussion with my client, we have decided to recall the appeal complaint in accordance with the procedure established by the law," the advocate has explained.
"In accordance with the practice of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), it is mandatory to exhaust only those domestic remedies that are treated as efficient. In this case, a complete loss of efficiency of national defence mechanisms is obvious. Our team is completing the preparation of a complaint to the ECtHR, which will be filed as soon as possible. Details will be provided additionally," the “News-Armenia” Agency quotes Mr Feroyan as saying.
Let us note here that earlier Judge Armen Danielyan considered the case of Robert Kocharyan the second president of Armenia.
"Armenian Electric Grids" react to Pashinyan's criticism
The Closed Joint-Stock Company (CJSC) "Armenia Electric Grids", owned by the businessman, Samvel Karapetyan, who has Russian citizenship, was not informed on what damage the Government Head (Premier) of this Transcaucasian republic (Armenia), Nikol Pashinyan, has promised to nationalize the Company. This was reported by the TASS Agency with reference to Natalia Sardjanyan, the press secretary of the above CJSC.
Earlier, Premier Nikol Pashinyan threatened to nationalize the CJSC "Armenian Electric Grids", owned by the "Tashir Group". Pashinyan also did not rule out that failures in operation of power grids were and are being undertaken "to generate discontent within Armenia."
"We are unaware of what violations are being discussed," Ms Sardjanyan has stated, emphasizing that reports of violations committed by the CJSC have nothing to do with what the Armenian Premier said about nationalization. "You know, from time to time, companies have some omissions related to the provision of services; and situations arise when fines are imposed," she has explained.
Samvel Karapetyan is in 44th place in the ranking of Russian billionaires according to the Forbes; his fortune is estimated at USD 3.2 billion. He owns the "Tashir Group" and the "Rio" Chain of Shopping Centres.
The Armenian Church and the opposition have condemned the persecution of Karapetyan. In particular, on June 22, supporters of the Armenian Apostolic Church marched from Yerevan to Echmiadzin and demanded to set Samvel Karapetyan free.
