Dagestani native faces threat of deportation from Turkey

The authorities of Turkey are preparing to deport from the country Ibragim Askerov, a native of Dagestan. The Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has put the man on the wanted list for his involvement in the extremist organization “At Takfir wal-Hijra”*, sources report.

Ibragim Askerov left for Turkey in January 2021 and was detained in the autumn of the same year. The native of Dagestan spent about four months at a deportation centre, and then he was released. In August 2023, Ibragim Askerov was detained again and repeatedly placed to a deportation centre.

Earlier, Ibragim Askerov had been granted a residence permit in Turkey, but the authorities revoked it, the “Kavkaz.Realii”** reports.

The Turkish intelligence services have registered Ibragim Askerov as a person involved in an extremist organization who poses a threat to the country’s security, a source reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that on November 1, 2022, six followers of the organization “At Takfir wal-Hijra”* were detained in Dagestan, Moscow, and Voronezh, and during a search, the police confiscated religious literature with extremist content from the detainees.

The organization “At-Takfir wal-Hijra”* (Accusation of unbelief and hijra) appeared in Egypt and spread in Northern Caucasus, in particular, in Kabardino-Balkaria, in 1997-1998. Supporters of the organization “At-Takfir wal-Hijra”* belong to the Salafi movement in Islam and are distinguished by strict requirements to their fellow believers.

*Declared extremist by the Russian Supreme Court in 2010 and banned in the Russian territory.

**Included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) into the register of foreign agents.
