South-Ossetian border guards detain resident of Georgia on suspicion of attempted sabotage

Levan Machabeli, a former Georgian military, entered the Tskhinvali District aiming to commit a provocation against Russian militaries, the Committee for State Security (known as KGB) of South Ossetia has informed.

Levan Machabeli, a Georgian citizen, was detained for violating the border near the village of Goyata in the Tskhinvali District, the South-Ossetian KGB has reported.

In 2005-2009, Machabeli was a serviceman of the Georgian Armed Forces and took part in hostilities in August 2008 in South Ossetia, the KGB asserts, as quoted on March 31 by the "Res" Agency.

According to law enforcers, after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Machabeli wanted to join as a volunteer the "Georgian National Legion" in Donbass, but due to his health problems he was rejected; and then he decided to enter the territory of South Ossetia and commit a provocation against the Russian militaries stationed there.

The State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia has stated that the detainee is not an active military and demanded to release him.
