Ramid Nagiev, PFPA activist, arrested

Ramid Nagiev, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was arrested for 30 days. The party associates his arrest with Nagiev's political activities.

"Ramid disappeared on May 6. Neither his relatives nor party members could contact him ... Only on May 7, already after the court session, the activist's family was informed about this from the police," said Seimur Khazi, deputy chairman of the PFPA.

He believes that Nagiev could be accused of violating the quarantine regime. "However, Ramid left his home by an SMS permit and went to the bank branch. That is, he was quite legally in the street. Besides, visiting bank is a valid reason for leaving home," said Khazi.

By April 22, ten PFPA activists had been arrested in Azerbaijan.

Ramid Nagiev had been arrested earlier. After an opposition rally on October 19, 2019, he was arrested for 15 days. In March 2019, he was arrested for 30 days.

Let us remind you that on April 13, the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) of Azerbaijan pointed to a new wave of repressions against critics of the government. Analysts called the arrests "preventive" measures against intensified protests amid social tensions during the quarantine period. By April 15, the Public Committee against Repression and Torture in Azerbaijan counted 17 arrested activists.
