JAMnews: Azerbaijani society reacts aggressively to criticism of national hero

The Azerbaijani student, who doubted the feat of Mubariz Ibragimov, who perished in Nagorno-Karabakh, was blamed as a traitor in her homeland.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Azerbaijani soldier Mubariz Ibragimov perished in an armed clash on the Nagorno-Karabakh-Azerbaijani border at night on June 19, 2010. He was posthumously awarded the title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan".

The circumstances of his death are still unknown. According to the Azerbaijani version, Ibragimov died during the battle, while opposing an attack of the Armenian side. According to the Armenian version, he crossed the frontline and made a diversion, as a result of which Armenian soldiers were killed.

Narmin Shakhmarzade, an Azerbaijani student, has doubted Ibragimov's feat, after which a scandal broke out in the Azerbaijani society, says the article "Azerbaijani student's statement about national hero triggers a wave of aggression in society", posted on the website of the edition named "JAMnews".

The girl does not exclude that a war crime case could have been opened against Mubariz Ibragimov, if he had survived and returned home; "because he crossed the border [the frontline, – note of the "Caucasian Knot"] without an order. In fact, the person whom we treat as a hero has put the state policy at risk," the student expressed her opinion.

After this statement, she was aggressively persecuted in social networks. Patriotic residents of Azerbaijan found that the student had insulted the memory of the national hero; they sharply criticized her for that; scolded her with obscenities; called a traitor; opened fake accounts on her behalf; and someone even tried to gather like-minded people for her physical execution, says the article.
