Baku court leaves activist Zaur Rovshanli under arrest

The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has dismissed a complaint about the arrest for 10 days of Zaur Rovshanli, a board member of the D18 Civil Movement. His defence intends to challenge the legality of the arrest at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Zaur Rovshanli was accused of disobeying police, Ruslan Izzetli, the head of the D18 Movement, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the Rovshanli's arrest has shown that there is no independent court in Azerbaijan. He believes that the young man is being persecuted because of his active civil stand, human rights activities and criticism of the authorities in social networks.

"After the detention, Zaur's rights were roughly violated. He was not allowed to inform his relatives about the detention and to invite an advocate to his choice," said Djavad Djavadov, a lawyer.
