Georgia's Govt abandons idea of cultivating marijuana

The Georgian Government has decided to recall the draft law on the cultivation of marijuana from the Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the Parliament, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 11, the Georgian Government proposed to allow marijuana growing for pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes for export. MPs criticized the bill and postponed its consideration.

Growing marijuana for export is in the interests of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party, who saw it as a new source of his income, the Georgian opposition has suggested.

"Initially, we had stated that any decision on this issue should be taken on the basis of a broad consensus, with the agreement of the church and the public," the press service of the Parliament quotes Mr Kobakhidze as stating.
