Teacher of Taganrog college fired after complaint to Medvedev about salary

Victor Makarenko, an Honoured Teacher of Russia, was fired from the Taganrog Metallurgical College ten days after he signed a teachers' collective complaint about low salaries.

"The country has lived through these years with double-digit inflation; its total level has already exceeded 50%; but where is the indexation laid down in Article 134 of the Russian Labour Code? According to the 'Rosstat' (the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia, – note of the "Caucasian Knot"), the minimum subsistence level for the Don region is over 10,000 roubles. At the teacher's rate of 8289 roubles, after the payment of taxes, 7211 roubles are left. Only in order for a teacher to reach the regional subsistence level, his/her salary should be raised by 40%, but this is not even in the intentions," the website "161.ru" quotes the text of the appeal today.

Victor Makarenko was the first to sign this appeal, the "Yuga" has reported today.

The teacher was fired on January 31, ten days after he signed the appeal, said a college source.

Victor Makarenko himself said that he would appeal against his dismissal at court.
