American state of Georgia recognizes NKR
The independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) has been recognized by the House of Representatives of the US state of Georgia. The NKR treats it as a most important political step.
The NKR was proclaimed on September 2, 1991; and on January 6, 1992, at a referendum on the NKR's status, 99.89% of the votes were cast in favour of independence of the NKR; and the Republic declared itself an independent state. Azerbaijan refuses to recognize the NKR's independence and considers it to be a part of its territory. Thus, the international status of the NKR is still unsettled.
"Today, the House of Representatives of the US state of Georgia has recognized the independence of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)," David Babayan, the head of the press service of the office of the Republic's President, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to his story, "this is the most important political, moral and humanitarian step," "as well as an exemplary expression of friendship and recognition of Artsakh's democratic and civilized state, which is worth following."
"Prior to Georgia, the NKR had been recognized by the US states of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Louisiana and California," Tigran Grigoryan, a political analyst, has reminded the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
