Activists demand from Council of Europe to condemn prosecution of Gevorg Safaryan
Supporters of the Front of National Salvation "New Armenia" have handed over a letter to the Armenian representative office of the Council of Europe (CE). In their letter, the activists request to condemn the prosecution of Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the "Constituent Parliament", and other arrested activists.
On December 31, 2015, Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the "Constitutional Parliament", was detained during the conflict between activists and policemen in Freedom Square in Yerevan. On January 3, the court pronounced the decision to arrest the activist for two months.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at the court hearing held on February 15, the court considered the motion filed by the Gevorg Safaryan's defence to change the pre-trial restriction measure and release the activist on bail. However, the court refused to grant the motion.
In the evening of February 15, Gagik Egiazaryan, a member of the Front of National Salvation "New Armenia", informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent on the appeal to the CE representative office. Gagik Egiazaryan has noted that the supporters of the movement call on the Council of Europe to condemn the prosecution of Gevorg Safaryan and other activists.
"In the letter, we have also appealed to the international community with a request to impose sanctions against agencies and individuals interacting with the Armenian authorities," Gagik Egiazaryan has emphasized.
