Stronger security measures introduced in Makhachkala by New Year
The venues of New Year celebrations and mass citizens' accumulation are guarded by reinforced police squads.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported the introduction of increased security measures on the eve of the New Year in cities of Southern Russia. On December 27 and 28, in Grozny, law enforcers conducted household-by household inspections and passport checks. Policemen are holding preventive measures in connection with the upcoming holidays. For security reasons, at night on January 1, the New Year celebrations in the central squares of Stavropol and Mikhailovsk have been cancelled.
As announced by Suleiman Charakov, the deputy head of the Department for Makhachkala of Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the operative situation is now complicated: there are threats of sabotage and terror acts, including in places of mass citizens' accumulation, especially during the holidays.
According to Charakov, the taken measures "ensure control over the operative situation in the capital of Dagestan."
In the central square of Makhachkala, they opened "a winter town" and established shopping booths, where one can buy hot drinks, pastries and snacks. On the New Year, the city public transport will run longer than usual, said the Ministry of Transport, Energy and Communications of the Dagestan.
