Defence of Varvara Karaulova challenges her arrest
The court has received an appeal against the continued detention of Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova), accused of an attempt to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS). This was reported by an official of the court.
On June 4, Varvara Karaulova and Muslim Akhmaev, a resident of Chechnya, were detained at the Turkish-Syrian border in a group of 14 Russian citizens, who, according to investigators, had an intention to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia. Once the case had received a public resonance, Varvara Karaulova changed her name and became Alexandra Ivanova.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 28, in Moscow, the court arrested Varvara Karaulova. On November 10, the student of the Moscow State University (MSU) pleaded guilty. This was reported by the judge during the trial. On the same day, the Moscow City Court upheld the arrest of Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova) until December 23. Later, the court extended the detention period until March 27, 2016.
"The court has received the appeal filed by the defence of Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova), in which the advocates challenge the court's decision to extend the arrest of the defendant until March 27," reports Yulia Skotnikova, Press Secretary of the Lefortovo Court of Moscow, as quoted today by the "RAPSI" (Russian Agency of Legal and Judicial Information).
