Experts in Baku state falseness of power operation in Nardaran

The village of Nardaran is notable for its strong religious tradition; however, there was no threat of overthrowing the constitutional order demonstrated by the villagers. The aim of the power operation was to defeat the movement "Muslim Unity" and arrest its leader Talekh Bagirzade, said the experts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot".

On November 26, in Nardaran, clashes broke out of believers with policemen. They were provoked by the special operation, during which activists of the "Muslim Unity" were detained. During the clashes seven people were killed.

Isa Gambar, the head of the centre for national strategic thought, has suggested that the authorities wanted to demonstrate, with the developments in Nardaran as an example, to the country's public and the world community a manifestation of "strong Islamism", which can be spread over the whole of Azerbaijan, if the "Aliev's regime abandons its tough authoritarianism and repressions."

According to his opinion, the authorities "are pursuing, for the sake of ensuring their interests, the erroneous policy of violent suppression."

Isa Gambar also said that there is no hope that law enforcement bodies will conduct an objective investigation.

Ali Kerimli, the leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has treated the authorities' actions in Nardaran as wrong. He believes that they only imitated the fight against religious radicalism in order to justify authoritarianism in the eyes of the world community by "the fight against terror."

Another aim of the operation, as he said, was to demonstrate the authorities' cruelty and commitment against the background of the growing social and economic crisis.
