Yerevan activists demand not to delay inquiry into incident with Akop Nazaryan

The materials of the service check of the incident involving the policeman, who slapped elderly demonstrator Akop Nazaryan, were received by the General Prosecutor's Office of Armenia. Till present, the police officers and the General Prosecutor's Office have not yet mentioned the terms within which the investigation is to be completed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 21, Yerevan hosted a rally against the increase in electricity tariffs, accompanied by clashes between demonstrators and policemen and detentions. Pensioner Akop Nazaryan accused a policeman that he slapped him on the face and broke his hearing aid. The Armenian Ombudsman has urged the law enforcement bodies to bring the policeman to responsibility.

The materials of the service check of the incident involving pensioner Akop Nazaryan have been sent to the General Prosecutor's Office of Armenia, reported Armen Malkhasyan, an officer of the press service of the Police of Armenia.

The protest actions will continue if the law enforcement bodies try to avoid criminal prosecution of the policeman. This was announced by political analyst Andrias Gukasyan, a member of the board of the civil movement "Arise, Armenia!"

According to advocate Lusine Saakyan, the police officer should be brought to criminal rather than disciplinary responsibility. However, the advocate doubts that the policeman will be prosecuted.
