Permyakov refuses to testify at trial in Gyumri
Today, the Armenia city of Gyumri has started hearing the case of Valery Permyakov, a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base, accused of desertion and execution of Avetisyan family.
On January 12, in Gyumri, six members of the Avetisyan family were assassinated. The only survivor of the attack – the six-month-old Sergey Avetisyan – was hospitalized in critical condition and on January 19, he died. A Russian regular soldier Valery Permyakov was arrested as a suspect of committing the massacre. Permyakov officially admitted the charges against him. The mass murder in Gyumri caused a wave of protests after a GPO source said that the suspect would not be handed over to Armenian law enforcement bodies, since he is a citizen of Russia.
At the trial in Gyumri, Valery Permyakov refused to give new evidence. The prosecutor read out his testimonies given during the preliminary investigation, as Alyona Katskalo, the press secretary of the North-Caucasian District Military Court of the Russian Federation, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to his testimonies given during the preliminary investigation, Permyakov escaped from his military unit at about two o'clock at night, because he did not want to continue his service there and planned to return home. He took his firearm intending to frighten somebody and get civil clothes and money. As evidenced by Permyakov, he occurred in the house of Avetisyan family just by chance. When someone woke up, he got scared and had to shoot them dead. Then, he changed clothes, left the weapons and his personal belongings in the house and ran away, said his initial testimonies.
Let us remind you that Valery Permyakov is in custody at the Russian military base in Gyumri; and the term of his arrest expires on January 30, 2016.
