Yerevan protester sentenced to six months in prison
Today, the first-instance court of general jurisdiction of the administrative districts Kentron and Nork-Marash has granted the prosecutor's demand and found the activist Narek Akopyan guilty of using violence to a policeman at the protest action in Yerevan. Akopyan was sentenced to six months in prison; but he intends to appeal against the verdict.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 23, 2014, in Yerevan, during a protest action against the increase of electricity tariff, a clash broke between policemen and activists. The police detained several dozens of protesters. One of the detainees, Narek Akopyan, was charged with the use of violence against an authority. On July 22, 2015, at the court session, during the oral hearing, the prosecutor demanded to sentence Akopyan to six months in prison.
The court verdict will be appealed against at the Court of Appeal, Narek Akopyan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Before the sentence comes into force, the preventive measure in the form of recognizance not to leave will remain in force, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
