Organizers of rally against nickel extraction near Khopyor accuse authorities of inaction

The participants of the rally, organized in Uryupinsk, state violations of their constitutional rights and inaction of the authorities in the context of the planned mining of nickel in the area of the Khopyor River.

Let us remind you that in May 2012, the auction for the development of nickel deposits in the Novokhopyor District of the Voronezh Region was won by Limited Liability Company (LLC) "Mednogorsky Copper Sulphate Plant", a part of the "UMMC-Holding". The plans for the development of nickel deposits caused widespread protests of residents of the Volgograd and Voronezh Regions.

The latest rally against the extraction of nickel was held in the city park of Uryupinsk on August 2. According to organizers, the rally was attended by 400 persons.

"The inaction of the regional and municipal bodies of power in the situation, when their electors treat the extraction of nickel near the Khopyor River as the major threat to their lives and health, is considered by us as a failure to perform their deputies' duties," says the resolution of the rally.

The authors of the appeal have called "to take the initiative and encourage citizens at the upcoming elections at all levels not to vote for the political parties, politicians and candidates, who have turned away from the nickel problem and betrayed the interests of their electors."
