Two protesters detained in Gyumri

In Gyumri, two protesters against the increase of electricity tariff have been delivered to the police. According to law enforcers, at detention, both of them were in a state of intoxication.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 17, the Commission for Regulation of Public Services (CRPS) of Armenia made a decision to increase electricity tariffs, starting from August 1, by 6.93 drams per 1 kW/h. On June 19, in the Armenian capital, activists declared a sit-in strike and on June 24, about 50 persons took part in protest action in Theatre Square of Gyumri.

During the detention of one of the protesters, policemen confiscated "a substance that looked like marijuana," the Armenian police have informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

The second activist was detained at No. 10 Vazgen Sargsyan Street also in the state of intoxication. During a personal search, a folding knife was found on him.

In both cases, law enforcement bodies have appointed examinations; and investigation is underway, said a police source.

So far, the "Caucasian Knot" has no comments on the police's statements from detainees or their representatives, as well as from coordinators of the protest action in Gyumri.
