On May 11-17, at least one person fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of May 11-17, 2015, at least one person was killed in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. No wounded were reported. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The killed person was a civilian supposedly killed by members of illegal armed formations (IAFs) in Dagestan.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On May 12, at 5:30 p.m. Moscow time, the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime, introduced at midnight of March 16, was cancelled in the cities of Khasavyurt and Kizilyurt and in the Khasavyurt, Kizilyurt, and Novolak Districts of Dagestan. The CTO results have not been reported yet.

Attacks on civilians

On May 17, according to the preliminary version, six unidentified armed men stopped a Niva car driven by a forester. They forced him out and killed him. The body of the forester with a gunshot wound was found 150 meters away from the car. It was reported that before they stopped the forester's car, the armed men stopped another car with a family, including a man, a woman, and a child. The armed men let them go. Investigators identified the victim as 48-year-old Zeinudin Batmanov, a resident of the village of Ikra of the Kurakh District of Dagestan. In connection with the attack on the forester, at 10:00 a.m. of the same day, the CTO regime was introduced in the Kurakh and Suleiman-Stalsky Districts.

Detentions

On May 7, Magomed and Khaskil Yakubov, sons of the head of the administration of Balakhani village of the Untsukul District of Dagestan, were detained. The brothers are suspected of illegal possession of weapons. According to a source in the investigating agencies of Dagestan, the Yakubov brothers are also suspected of aiding and abetting members of illegal armed formations (IAFs); however, no charge has been still filed against them.

On May 13, in the course of operational and search activities, law enforcers detained a 37-year-old resident of the village of Koshkeldy of the Grozny District of Chechnya, who in late 2011, according to the operative information, provided assistance to an active member of an illegal armed formation, who was killed during a special operation held in Chechnya in 2012. The issue of opening a criminal case is under consideration.

On May 14, the police detained a group of residents of Ingushetia suspected of attempting on the life of a law enforcer in the autumn of 2014. According to investigators, in the town of Karabulak, the members of the criminal grouping planted an improvised explosive device (IED) near the house, in which the policeman lived. The suspects' plan failed due to alertness of citizens, and an IED was defused in a timely manner. Besides, the investigators have revealed that the suspects illegally acquired firearms and explosive substances and produced of them more than five IEDs.
