Chechen resident sentenced to 7 years in colony for "honour killing"

Today, the Staropromyslovskiy District Court of Grozny has passed its verdict in the case of Sultan Daurbekov, accused of killing his daughter. Daurbekov was sentenced to 7 years in a high security colony.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in November 2013 the disappearance of Zarema Daurbekova was reported by local residents. Her father Sultan Daurbekov was accused of killing her for violation of traditions. At the court session on April 8, Sultan Daurbekov said that he had killed his daughter in a fit of passion.

Today, the court has sentenced Sultan Daurbekov to 7 years of imprisonment, to be served in a high security colony, a source from the court told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, adding that the prosecutor asked for 8 years in prison for him.

The "Caucasian Knot" has repeatedly reported about the so-called "honour killings" (when family members commit extrajudicial killings of girls or women suspected of extramarital connections) in Chechnya. In January, a similar case was transferred to the court of the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya: a man was accused of killing his elder sister. Earlier, in October 2014, in the Zavodskoy District of Grozny, a 30-year-old local man was detained under suspicion of killing his younger sister.
