In Sochi, rights defenders decide to re-inspect police stations

Today, following the results of the meeting with the leadership of the city UVD (Interior Department), human rights defenders and members of public organizations of Sochi, have made a decision to repeatedly inspect the ROVDs (District Interior Divisions). During the today's meeting, the activists summed up the results of the inspection held on April 21-30.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the inspection of the police stations was held on the initiative of the "Moscow Helsinki Group" and the "Youth Human Rights Movement". The group to inspect the police activities has included human rights defenders, advocates, journalists and social activists.

Today, at the meeting with Sergey Ogurtsov, Deputy Chief of the UVD for the city of Sochi, the activists summed up the results of the inspection. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed about it by Semyon Simonov, one of the initiators of the inspection, the coordinator of the Sochi reception network "Migration and Law" of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

"We were informed that after our inspection and revealed problems, many shortcomings have been eliminated or are being eliminated now," said Semyon Simonov.

In their turn, observers have suggested the UVD to organize video surveillance at police stations, improve the detention facilities for administrative detainees, and place water coolers at police stations. Besides, human rights defenders have also made a decision to repeat their inspection.
