Georgia prepares changes to Constitution Article on equality of spouses in marriage

In Georgia, politicians, including the oppositionists, declare their readiness to support the proposal announced by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to constitutionally secure the definition of a family as a union of a man and a woman. Members of the State Commission of Georgia have already prepared an appropriate statement to change the Constitution Article on equality of spouses in marriage.

"This draft law fully reflects the Georgian tradition. The Prime Minister has made an excellent initiative: if it is written in the law and, as you know, at present, Georgia does not allow same-sex marriage then, he thinks the formulation should be raised it to a higher level. And we should directly write in the Constitution that in Georgia, a marriage is a union between a man and a woman," Thea Tsulukiani, Minister of Justice, has stated at the press conference held on March 28.

Activists of civil society in Georgia perceive ambiguously the proposal made by Irakli Garibashvili.
