During week of March 10-16, 2014, 5 persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of March 10-16, 2014, at least 5 persons suffered in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. No wounded were reported. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

All the deceased are suspected members of the armed underground in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Special operations and CTOs

On March 14, a regime of counterterrorist operation (CTO) was introduced in the whole territory of the city district of Nalchik. During the CTO regime, a private house located in Shortanov Street was blocked. As a result of the followed armed clash, five militants were killed. This was reported by a source from law enforcement agencies of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR). Three persons killed during the special operation are identified they are Tengiz Guketlov, Anzor Margushev and Vadim Shogenov, who were put on the wanted list for attacks on taxi drivers committed in the Stavropol Territory.

Detentions

On March 13, at about 9:00 a.m. Moscow time, the Salafi mosque located in Kotrov Street in Makhachkala was approached by law enforcers from the Soviet ROVD (Interior Division), who conducted mass detention of mosque-goers. People were taken out of the very mosque and of the adjacent shops and cafes, where mosque-goers usually gathered. The policemen did not mention the reasons for the detentions. In total, according to a resident of Makhachkala, at least 15 persons were detained. By 6:00 p.m. of the same day, all the detainees were released.

On March 14, in the village of Mir of the Chegem District of Kabardino-Balkaria, policemen detained a local resident suspected of aiding members of illegal armed formations (IAFs). During the search conducted in the detainee's house, the policemen found a ready-to-use improvised explosive device (IED) with power of up to 5 kg of TNT equivalent.
