In the period from February 24 to March 2, armed conflict in Northern Caucasus claimed one life

During the week of February 24 to March 2, 2014, at least one person was killed in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus; no information about wounded persons was reported. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The casualty is an employee of law enforcement bodies of Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

On February 24, in the outskirts of the village of Chontaul, Kizilyurt District of Dagestan, the body of a serviceman of the Russia's Ministry of Defence was found; he had been kidnapped by unidentified masked men while hunting in the forest on January 31.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On February 26, at 9:00 p.m., the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime, introduced on February 21 at 2:00 p.m. in the Magaramkent District, was cancelled.

Explosions and terror acts

On February 27, at No. 86 Tolstoy Street in the city of Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), an explosion occurred at the entrance to the pharmacy. An unidentified explosive device (IED) was triggered. Nobody was hurt; and the pharmacy was partially destroyed. So far, there is no official version of the explosion, but locals believe that the pharmacy could be blown up because it sold narcotic drugs to young people.

Detentions

On February 21, near the building of the Pension Fund in Makhachkala, power agents detained Arthur Djanbatyrov, a resident of Leninkent. His advocate said that law enforcers beat and tortured his client, trying to force him to confess of possession of weapons and ammunition, and to slander persons known and unknown to him. This information appeared on February 26.

On February 25, a truck was stopped at a stationary DPS (road-and-post service) post in the Neftekumsk District of the Stavropol Territory, located on the border with Dagestan, for inspection, as police inspectors found the driver's behaviour suspicious. In the fuse compartment of the truck, they found a black plastic bag, containing three boxes of threaded cartridges. The driver could not explain the origin of the ammunition and was taken to the local ROVD (District Interior Division); a criminal case was opened against him on illicit trafficking in arms and ammunition (Article 222 of the Russian Criminal Code).
