North-Ossetian parliament adopts amendments to abolish direct election of republic's leader

Today, the MPs of North Ossetia have adopted in the second and final reading by a majority vote a bill to abolish the direct election of the republic's leader and his/her election by the regional legislative assembly (parliament).

The bill was supported by 52 MPs, six voted against, and three abstained, the ITAR-TASS reports.

Currently, Taimuraz Mamsurov is the head of the republic; he came into office for the second time in June 2010. His office expires in 2015.

Let us remind you that the law that empowers the subjects of the Russian Federation to cancel the direct election of their leaders was signed by the president of the Russian Federation on April 2 this year. The relevant local laws are already in place in Dagestan and Ingushetia.
